If you're thinking of becoming a massage therapist in the UK, one question you may be asking is whether you need a license to practice. The answer to this question is not straightforward, as it depends on several factors. Bodyology Massage School has been operating in the UK since 2008, and we are happy to share our knowledge.
Firstly, it's essential to understand that the UK doesn't have a single regulatory body for massage therapists. Even more confusing, in the UK, it is not required by the government to have ANY regulation in massage. However, most massage schools recognise the need to have some self-regulation to improve the courses' quality. However, those are not mandatory. In some other countries, massage is regulated by the government, so the requirements of what the diploma courses should include are straightforward.
Several different non-mandatory professional organisations in the UK set standards for the industry. These include the General Council for Massage Therapies (GCMT) and the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), to name the top two.
While these organisations don't issue licenses, they have requirements to be met to become a member. For example, the GCMT requires that therapists have completed a minimum of 500 hours of training, including at least 100 hours of hands-on practice, and hold a recognised anatomy and physiology qualification. Conversely, the CNHC requires that therapists have completed a minimum of 100 hours of training, including at least 40 hours of hands-on practice, and hold a recognised qualification in their chosen therapy.
Some local authorities in the UK require that massage therapists hold a license to practice. The name of this license is "Massage and special treatment premises licensing". Besides massage, manicure, chiropody, sunbeds, electrolysis and other treatments involving heat, light or vapour (such as saun) require the same licensing. These licenses are typically issued by the council and require therapists to demonstrate that they meet certain standards, such as holding appropriate qualifications, having adequate insurance, and adhering to a code of conduct. For example, most local authorities in London ask therapists to hold this license. Please check your postcode to see if you need to have a license.
So, while there is no single license for massage therapists in the UK, several requirements must be met to practice. These include holding appropriate qualifications, meeting professional standards set by organisations such as the GCMT and CNHC, and potentially holding a license issued by your local council.
If you're considering becoming a massage therapist, it's essential to research and ensures that you meet all the requirements. By doing so, you can be confident that you're providing safe and effective treatments to your clients and operating within the law.
