Massage Improves The Immune System

Count your white blood cells; if you don’t believe it 😊

Bodyology participated in a BBC medical research showing that our white blood cell number significantly increases after a massage.

“The next research will find that massage improves your IQ 😊. Seeing the medical research catch up on what therapists have observed for decades is encouraging: clients get a stronger immune system, improving in so many unexpected ways”. Dror Steiner, Bodyology founder.

What’s the mechanism that improves the immune system after a massage?

Reduction of Stress Massage promotes deep relaxation and reduces stress levels. A high level of stress is associated with

  • an increase in cortisol, a hormone that suppresses the immune system.
  • an increase in ‘fight or flight’ and adrenaline.

Enhanced Lymphatic Circulation The lymphatic fluid contains white blood cells and other immune system components. Massage can improve lymphatic fluid circulation, which can aid in removing waste products and toxins, boosting immune function.

Increased White Blood Cell Numbers and Activity Some studies (like the one in the video above) have shown that massage therapy increases the activity of natural killer (NK) cells and lymphocytes, which are white blood cells involved in the immune response against infections and cancer.

Improvement in Sleep Quality Regular massage can improve sleep quality; adequate sleep is essential for a healthy immune system. During sleep, the body produces cytokines, proteins that regulate immune responses and help fight off infections and inflammation.

Pain Reduction Chronic pain and inflammation weaken the immune system. Massage may help reduce pain and inflammation, allowing the immune system to function more efficiently.
